Negotiating your salary and job offer can be a very stressful situation for many people. Here a few simple rules to stick by.
Rule#1: Wait until the employer has expressed interest in hiring you for the job.
Rule#2: Understand what your work is worth and be sure to know exactly what is on your resume.
Rule#3: Consider other factors in your compensation like bonuses, vacation time and PTO (personal time off).
Rule #4: Evaluate your own personal situation. If you have been unemployed for a long time, switching careers, be sure to consider all of these factors.
Rule#5: Try not to reveal pay history. You can politely answer by saying that your prior employer has asked that you keep that confidential.
