What do employers look for in a background check?

I am often asked this question and it goes beyond just criminal background. Employers want to know everything about you that is public knowledge. They will check your Facebook page, your linkedin profile and more. You have worked long and hard to get that interview. Make sure you take as much time and care in having a clean background. Be prepared to answer for any of the items on this background check list.

  1. Criminal history
  2. Civil history
  3. National wants and warrants
  4. Credit Report
  5. Social Security verification
  6. Previous employer verification
  7. Drug Tests
  8. Reference verification
  9. Education verification
  10. DMV records

Remember, always be honest with potential employers about any issues that may appear on your background. If you address the issue first chances are you can put to rest any potential concerns an employer might have.

If you have any questions on employment background checks, check out the Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA) for additional information.
